Electronic typewriters are nice, they do a lot of things but they are prone to two serious problems: 1) they have ribbons that are VERY hard to replace; and 2) if they break no-one has the ability to fix them. Because of this I only have about five in my collection and as they develop problems I just throw them in the dump. I can put up with electro-mechanical models but electronic machine are a lost cause to maintain. This machine is still running so it is still part of my collection. Here is a picture:
All the best.

I only have a few electrics in my collection, I never used them except at the office when I was working and Computers chased them away to storage rooms pretty quickly. This machine I picked up because it was so cheap, little did I know I couldn't get it running well, it seemed very slow on the carriage return, when I opened the case so it had to have an appointment with Eustac. He fixed it and I decided to keep it, it was again a time capsule with the operating manual and the warranty card still in the case. I am going to have to use it more. Here is a picture for your viewing pleasure.
I tried to find someone who had used this typewriter for their writing but no joy. If you know of a writer that used this machine let me know please.

No 48: TOTD - Adler J5
It's a quiet news day so we need another typewriter. I have a lot of J5s in my collection, here is one from Calgary. I like using them and find them a real work horse machine plus they come in a formed plastic case which keeps them safe when you move them around. There is nothing worse then having a machine damaged or destroyed because the case has failed.
Here is a picture of the J5 on my typing table, I like using a typing table because it lowers the height of the keyboard slightly for comfort. They were common 20 years ago but now they are getting scarce, if you can find one snap it up.
Someone once said that these machines look like fighter planes. I agree they look great and even though they have a plastic body they are worth collecting and using.
I am trying to find a writer that used one but so far no joy.

No one takes responsibility for the bad or worse decision rather they hide behind "Climate Change". We have zoning rules for a reason and politicians cannot bend the rules in their constant ques to hover up tax dollars. We are doomed by corruption and ignorance.

With all of the politicians slow-walking the Trans Mountain looping project into oblivion they will bring the country to crisis that will hurt everyone in the pocket book particularly if you live in British Columbia. Horgan the Premier of the NPDP/Green coalition government, can be happy with the short term result, the Kinder Morgan project will wither and be cancelled because of the slow-walking by the Feds and the Province.
The Greenies in Quebec managed to kill Energy East using this game plan, but western Canadian oil wasn't critical to their energy supply they already buy all of their crude at tidewater or the US. Their only pain is that they have to pay Brent for their imports but they remain smug that they don't rely on les anglais for their crude oil supply.
British Columbia is another matter. If things continue to degenerate the NDP government of BC will force the NDP government of Alberta to ratchet up the dispute by cutting exports to BC. It's nice to see the internecine fight start. It is however kabuki theater, meaninglessness action The exception is the price of gasoline. This is going to cause gasoline prices to spike in the Province (regular in Fernie is already $1.40/Litre) which won't cause the BC NDP to change it's policy but it will give the citizens of the oil producing provinces the pleasure of watching the west coast luddites really pay to drive their cars. Will we see $2.00/Litre in Vancouver and the lower mainland? Get the popcorn and enjoy the show.

No 46: TOTD - Underwood Quiet Deluxe
This machine was one of the first typewriters I bought from Ossie at Starline. He was doing my overhauls for me and he started offering machines for sale. I thought it would help to give him a little trade, the typewriter service business was in decline even then and I couldn't resist the machine, it was something I could use and it seemed to be is good shape, not to much wear with the exception of some keys that were a little abraded by someones nails. The price was right, the age was in my sweet spot and it is now part of my permanent collection. I only have two Underwoods that are original Underwood machines as compared to Olivetti Underwoods which have Olivetti guts.
What is nice about the machine? It has the feel I like - snappy and quick, wear is minimal, construction is all metal and quality and it remains a useful machine to this day. I will use it more in the future. Here is a picture:

No. 44: TOTD - Speedwriter 235
Well a new weeks starts and it's time for a new typewriter of the day. Today's machine is a Speedwriter 235. I am calling it a 235 since that is the Commodore Model. This machine is perfect and a time-capsule , almost unused, pristine condition and the case came with even the brushed, cleaning rag and a note on how to unpack it is 6 languages. I had the machine overhauled by Eustace and put it away without typing on it. My mistake but I just didn't have time at then. It is now going in my permanent collection it is so perfect.
Here is a picture for you:
I am not going to look for a writer who used a Speedwriter, it is such a limited issue that they didn't seem to break into the North American or English markets. I will keep looking. If you are interested you can find out more on X over it.
Enjoy,

No. 43 - Typewriter of the Day: Remington Travel-riter
No. 43 - TOTD: Remington Travel-riter
It's Sunday and the topics I follow are a quiet. A solution is to put in another typewriter of the day into the blog. Remingtons are true workhorses, in particular the Quiet-riters, the other machines in their lines are also interesting. The Travel-riters are a smaller machine, more portable and probably they were a lot cheaper to purchase. Today's machine is a later model of the Travel-riter, still all metal and still with the same functions as the earlier machines of the same line including a key with the degree sign and division character; you don't see that key at all on any other machine. There is no tab function and no paper guide so it is stripped to the basics. I am keeping this machine in the permanent collection.
Here is a picture.
Looking at the records I cannot find a reference to anyone who uses this model but I will keep looking. It types very well and seems to be almost unused.

Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the basement here are some serious threats to think about. I personally think that the threat of robotics is the nearest term threat. With robotics reducing the need for a workforce we can cause a demand problem; workers are consumers, robots are not. Robotics will allow for increased lower cost production but if there is less demand for the products the prices will have to be reduced. Also, except for the baby issue the robotics and AI issues will be dealt with by the EMP attacks.

No. 42 - Typewriter of the Day: Olympia SM 4 with Script Font
No. 42 - TOTD Olympia SM4 with Script Font.
It's raining and snowing here so I might as well take time to do a TOTD. I was going to do a Remington Travel-riter but I decided to cull the machine and am going to take it in to the Salvation Army Thrift Store. So on to the SM4. This typewriter entered my collection years ago. I am fascinated by machines that type in Script Font and this machine and its colour I enjoyed. It had a problem with mashed rubber washers which made the machine sag and rub the carriage against the case. Fixed this and it types fine now. Just need to adjust the alignment of the upper case to the lower case - the upper case types slightly high and I need to find what is rolling around somewhere is the guts of the machine ant it will be perfect. Condition is showing some wear from the carriage return lever and the space bar where the last owners thumb rested. This would mean that this machine was used a lot which is amazing for script font which was usually just used for personal communication.
Let see what other writers used the SM4. Going to Richard Polt's site I found Evan S. Connell, a wirter that I have not yet read but whom I will now.

No.41 - Typewriter of the Day: Smith Corona Silent Super 1958
No. 41 - TOTD Smith Corona Silent Super
This tan machine was made in 1958. It needs a better cleaning the Heinz gave it, everything was a bit stiff when I opened it up but it seems to be is very good condition with no damage. I will have to use it some more, right now I am warming it up. It was interesting to have both the pamphlet for the machine and the typing notes that Smith Corona offered their customers.
Looking onto the web I see that another writer who used a Silent Super was
Dr Seuss or as known to Adults Theodore Seuss Geisel. Thanks again to Richard Polt and his site for help in finding the info.

Politicized science is not science it is just propaganda in support of Government policy. We are in trouble when we lower the bar on scientific research. The inability to reproduce results reported is the heart of the matter. Like errors in math it makes the results irrelevant. It is examples like this that destroy to confidence in Government. They believe this bogus science and want us to believe it as well.

No. 40- Typewriter of the Day: Hermes Media 3 (Series 2)
No. 40 - TOTD: Hermes Media 3 (Series 2)
Here is a series 2 Hermes Media 3 with script font. I didn't notice in the pictures when I bought this machine that the carriage knobs were broken. I was interested in the script typewface and the low price. Heinz overhauled this for me and managed to replace the knobs. Media 3 version of the Hermes line is a stripped down machine with no touch control, tabs or the fancy margin inidcators of the 3000, other then that they are identical.
As for writer that used a Media 3, sadly I have not located one yet but I will keep looking.
Have a great day.

No. 39 - TOTD Triumph Norm
As I have said, I love Triumph typewriters, I can't remember when I bought this machine. I must not have been paying attention since this machine has a German keyboard. I must have got it on a first bid. When I opened it up to try it I was amazed, its another time capsule with the paper work and the accessories included - NICE. The machine was overhauled by Heinz at Addon and his said it was in good condition and dated from 1953 though he couldn't fine the serial number to check. This moved it to the keeper herd. Typing on it I noticed I needed a new ribbon but the touch was excellent and the German Keyboard didn't stumble me.
I was interested to see if therewas a writer who used this model.
Gong back to Richard Polt's site I found the German writer Wolfgang Koeppen. Again a writer I have to put on my list.

The greenies and neo-marxists have to remember that in the earth's history, as studied in Geology, the changes take a very long time, so you might as well stop flagellating yourselves about how bad humans are and just put on another sweater, or, if you can afford it with the carbon tax, turn up the heat.

One of the most famous culinary writers, James Beard used a Hermes to type his books, I haven't been able to relocate the picture of James Beard in his living room with the Hermes sitting on his coffee table but I will keep looking. If you have seen it or know where \i can find it please let me know.
Thanks,

No.37 - Typewriter of the day: Olympia SM9 (1976)
No.37 TOTD: Olympia SM9 (1976)
This a a late model SM9 in my collection, I hadn't used it, possibly never, but it had been looked at and a new ribbon installed. (Heinz at Addon must have done it a few years again) When I first started typing a couple of keys were sticky but after a page of work everything was perfect. This is a late model machine and in Typewriterdatabase it noted that the later machines were built cheaper to compete with Japanese machines. After working on this machine it turns out that the finish is sightly cheaper but the action remains the same.
In interesting story, I graduated in 1976 and started working, at this time both the IBM and Olympia companies had sales teams out selling typewriters literally door to door downtown. I could have both an Olympia SM9 for $375, I passed at the time.
Looking at writers who used an Olympia SM9 I went back to the WriteElephant to see who was both a writer and a user of the SM9 and I found someone, Simon Gray, a British playwright, screen play wirter and even novelist who did his first drafts on his SM9 and then transposed his work onto the computer for manipulation. He was an interesting chap in that another fact was he never drove a car.
Here he is with his SM9.

Well some sense enters the British handling of "me too" sex cases just as sense leaves the scene in Canada. We here are so behind the times!

No. 36 - Typewriter of the Day: Speedwriter Cavalier
No. 36 - TOTD Commodore Speedwriter Cavalier
I couldn't find a writer that used a Commodore Speedwriter but after some advice from Richard Polt I found a picture of a Czech writer using a Consul, the company that supplied Commodore with the parts needed to assemble the machine in Canada. After leaving typewriters Commodore went on to be an early leader in personal computer manufacturing with the C64 and the Amiga. When I bought this machine I had Eustace, at Brentwood Business Systems, fix it up and the case repaired at my luggage place, a strap handle had come off. Here is a picture:
The case straps are still lousy but this machine is snappy the way I like it, built like a tank similar to a Facit and is literally just a rebadged Consul. If you are looking for a working typewriter but want a deal look for a Consul or a Speedwriter.
Here is a picture I tracked down on Google Images of the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal which I found on the WriteElephant blog which has a great write up on him. I haven't read any of his work but I have him on the list now for reading.

I had forgotten about the Scopes Monkey Trial. We will watch this trial a little more closely in light of the analogy.
