Pipe Missive 03/16/17.

Yesterday was the Ides of March. Not an auspicious day if you happen to be Julius Caesar for the rest of us it may mark the advent of spring. Here not yet, it has been in the minuses for the last week.

I have often been asked what was the best tobacco I have ever smoked.  I have no answer because there are too many variables. Around 1982 I smoked a bowl of Royal Yacht, (made by Dunhill) not a tobacco I have ever favoured. That bowl was one of the best smokes I ever had. I remember it well. It was a June day and I had just had a lunch of French cheeses, cold cuts amongst which was a superb Hungarian salami, along with a fair number of glasses of white wine and some very good company. After which I lit up a slightly large pipe filled with the aforementioned Royal Yacht. As I smoked it over ten next 45-50” while consuming a glass more or two, it was unbelievably good. Funnily, many attempts at smoking Royal Yacht again never worked, possibly because I am a confirmed Latakia lover.

Smoking a given tobacco and how you like it depends on many things. What you have eaten and drunk recently, your general state of mind and the company you are with or not.  Even tobaccos that I smoke and enjoy regularly vary because of these differing circumstances. Consequently there is no best tobacco I have ever smoked. There are only bowlfuls that were exceptionally good - because of? Life consists not of memorable days but memorable moments.

Enjoy and if you are a tobacco burner go to his site.
