No 46: Typewriter of the Day - Underwood Quiet Deluxe
No 46: TOTD - Underwood Quiet Deluxe
This machine was one of the first typewriters I bought from Ossie at Starline. He was doing my overhauls for me and he started offering machines for sale. I thought it would help to give him a little trade, the typewriter service business was in decline even then and I couldn't resist the machine, it was something I could use and it seemed to be is good shape, not to much wear with the exception of some keys that were a little abraded by someones nails. The price was right, the age was in my sweet spot and it is now part of my permanent collection. I only have two Underwoods that are original Underwood machines as compared to Olivetti Underwoods which have Olivetti guts.
What is nice about the machine? It has the feel I like - snappy and quick, wear is minimal, construction is all metal and quality and it remains a useful machine to this day. I will use it more in the future. Here is a picture:

No. 45: Typewriter of the Day - Smith Corona Silent
No. 45: TOTD Smith Corona Silent
Here is a beautiful old machine from my collection. It was a bit stiff when I opened it up but after a brief workout it was working perfectly. Very little wear so it was put away a long time ago. This model is a Silent. I have Super Silents, and Supers but this is the first Silent I have come across in my collection. Here for your viewing pleasure is a picture.
I don't have an writer that used a Silent but if you know of one let me know and I will add the details.

What did you suspect? With all of the data manipulation and the actual measurement problems, the ideologically based computer models suffer from GIGO (garbage in garbage out) and have done nothing other then generate hype.

Who would have believed that the turbines would not have been financially positive cash flow, regardless of subsidies after the 20 years or so they have been in service. Their cap costs must have been recovered by now which would mean that they have never broken even. Only a government could run such a money losing project. We are crazy.
