No 34 - Typewriter of the Day: Royal Custom

No. 34 - TOTD: Royal Custom

These machines from the early 70's are easy to find but most have not born the test of time well.  I have had a few and sorry to say a lot have gone the Goodwill or Salvation Army Thrift Store exit.  I don't want to waste space in my collection for machines I wouldn't use on a daily basis.  This Custom has made the cut due to its script font.  I am a sucker for script machines.  Here you go:

PS didn't bother to find anyone who wrote with one.

More on the issue of fake science.  We only destroy our trust when we allow fake science to be accepted.  YOU CANNOT HIDE FAKE RESEARCH FOR LONG.  At the present we are almost at a tipping point when the credibility of science in general is diminishing.  Trust can only be maintained if you separate science from politics.

No. 33 Typewritier of the Day: Triumph Perfect

No 33 - TOTD: Triumph Perfect

Not in the best of condition when I got this machine, I would have normally cycled it out of m collection except for the fact that is hase a script font and it was a time capsule containing the original paper work, manuals, brushes and even the receipt.  I can't read the date on the receipt but I am assuming it is from the sixties.  The Owner bought the typewriter from a US Navy PX, for $89.  It needs a lot of bumpers for the case - something I will work on but it is a real treasure.

Here is a picture:

Enjoy.

You have to love this article, the picture of the steam coming off the cooling towers and the dark tones used to scare the ignorant.  The article is part of the new anti-energy push of the Climate Change ideologies, getting the banking community to stop lending money for energy projects.  Nice idea, with the correct political involvement the banks may be forced into the position of starving the energy sector for credit.  I think the idea comes out of neo-modernistic political/economic thinking, that is that banking practices should be crafted on an ideological basis and not a economic basis.  The shareholders will not be happy.

Climate change is so yesterday.  It is a constant and it is unsolvable by humans.

Watch for more pushing on this banking tactic in the next few weeks.

No.32 - Typewriter of the Day: Olympia SM4 Deluxe (1961)

No. 32 - TOTD: Olympia SM4 Deluxe (1961

I could never resist picking up an Olympia.  This SM4 has been languishing in my collection for some time.  It need a little TLC, the rubber dampers need changing and it could use a cleaning, you can see the previous owner was a smoker from the nicotine on the frame, but other then that it types great.  I love the color, a willow green, black keys and a green space bar.  I checked the serial number and it is a 1961 model.

I went and had a look at writers who used this model.  From what Richard Polt reports possible Stan Laurel was a user, David Mamet also.

No. 31 - Typewriter of the Day: Erika Model 30

No. 31 - TOTD: Erika Model 30

We are almost beyond living memory of most of the major events of the last century.  All of the veterans of WW2 are gone now, all of the veterans from WW1 are truly gone.  When I a was a kid in the sixties, I knew quite a few elderly gentlemen who had served in the Great War.  By the time I was thirty they were all gone.  Seme now that I am over sixty with the veterans of the Second World War.  The typewriter of the day is an Erika Model 30 which was made in the GDR, East Germany, Those  who want to scare themselves if they remember the fall of the wall need to realize that  it came down twenty nine years ago.  Does time  fly!

Here is my little reminder of that time:

It was sitting in my collection, untouched, I pulled it out and ran some paper in  - Perfect!

Looking at the Classic Typewriter Page the only writer I could find who used an Erika was Bertolt Brecht.

He is not using an Erika Model 30, nor does he have paper in his machine but he is enjoying  cigar.

No 30 Typewriter of the Day - Series 3 TP2 Facit 1968

No 30 TOTD - Facit TP2  Series 3 (1968)

I was very surprised to find that Prince Bernadotte also designed the Facit TP2.  I found this looking up the serial number for this machine on the Typewriter Data Base.  I should do that for every machine.  This particular machine was sitting in my collection ignored and unrestored.  It is however almost the end for the run for TP2s, the following year it was replaced by the model 1620 which all the experts regard as a lessor machine.  Here it is:

As you can see there is no ribbon, spools missing, and it is stiff needing a cleaning and lube job.  I see it needs better feel as well the rubber is spalling.  I find most Facits have poor feet but looking at the design they should be easy to replace with something generic.

As for writers that use Facits the only person I have found so far is the Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann, (Which model - I think TP2).  Thanks to the Writing Ball Blog.

No.29 - Typewriter of the Day: Underwood Universal

No 29: TOTD Underwood Universal - Golden Touch

Here is another time capsule in my collection.  I hadn't typed on this machine since I picked it up.  What a waste, it is perfect, types well has a good ribbon and has everything from the paperwork to the key for the case.  It could use a little more exercise which is something I can only look to myself to handle.  Enjoy the picture.

I am uploading this now but will update this posting when I can add some information as to who used an Underwood  Universal to write with.  I have reached out to Richard Polt,  the typewriter guru, for help with this interesting question.

J

P.S. Richard got back to me almost immediately with the following:

Hi John,

Thanks for writing.

I have a list of writers and their typewriters at http://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/typers.html

According to one of my correspondents, Australian writer Ruth Park used such a machine. Just now I found the attached photo; it’s definitely an Underwood from the ‘50s, but I can’t be sure of which model.

best wishes,

Richard

It's not that clean, it could use a new ribbon but it works so I am marking it a keeper.  All my machines with problems are going to a friend who repairs them and sells them.  I only fix/overhaul really prime specimans for my collection.  This machine is interesting in that it is the only model I have where the case is plastic and not aluminum.

No. 27 Typewriter of the Day - Triumph Norm (German Keyboard)

No. 27 - TOTD: Triumph Norm (German Keyboard)

I can't remember when I bought this machine but I have a thing for Triumph typewriters,  One of my Professors, Dr. Eric Waldman used a Triumph, I don't know whether it was a Norm or a Perfeckt but I do remember he had it on a portable typing table next to his desk.  Dr. Waldman both participated in post WW2 European politics, In 1946 - 1949 he was one of the founders of West German Intelligence, later, he taught modern European politics at the University of Calgary.  I always assumed that he used the Triumph because of the German keyboard and I assumed he did a lot of work in German.  Dr. Waldman died in 2007 at the great age of 91.  if you are interested in Dr Waldman story during the war and the post war period follow this link militaryhistoryonline.

The other user of a Triumph was my favorite author Ian Fleming, one of his machines was a triumph.
Here is a picture of him sitting at the machine.  I am assuming that this picture was taken at Golden Eye in Jamaica.

This particular machine has a German Keyboard and is just the Norm so it is not on my favorite list but all the same it is not ready to go to Goodwill.

I don't need to go over all the reasons I love these machines but I have bought a few, to say the least, looking for a perfect specimen.  The perfect models are time capsules, bought, used a little and then put away for years.  It's not that I don't mind the character of a machine that banged out thousands of words and you can see the marks of the writers labours, I like those as well but my quest was for a perfect machine from the past.  This is one of them, only a couple of dings but otherwise perfect.  Enjoy the picture.

NO 23 - Typewriter of the Day: Hermes Baby

No. 23 TOTD - Hermes Baby

I have a very soft spot in my heart for the Baby Hermes, this was the first typewriter I had of my own, at least for a while since it was borrowed and I finally had to give it back.  Not only was it the smallest machine I had ever seen, it had an amazing pedigree.  The machine had been lugged all through the North African Campaign by a member of the Polish Brigade fighting with the 8th Army it had survived the war and made it to Canada in the 70's.  It fascinated me and I have tried to collect them ever since.  Here is a picture of one of my machines, this one is very dirty and needs both a new ribbon and a new platten.  I luckily have a parts machine and rather then sending the platten to JJ Short for recovering I will see if I can get by with a change out and do a cleaning at the same time - when spring finally gets here.  This is my Hermes Baby.

No 18 Typewriter of the Day: Torpedo 18 - 1953

No18 TOTD a Torpedo 18

I bought this machine from a lady who lived in a small town north of Edmonton.  I am very fond of  Torpedos because of their action and I am also fond of typewriters manufactured in 1953, the year of my birth.  The owner was offering the typewriter on eBay and since she had a Canadian address I knew she would have very little traffic.  I picked it up for my opening bid and discovered that I had bought a great little machine.  I sometimes forget to read the description what I am bidding on and end up with some nasty surprises.  Other times I find that the machine is totally

trashed either by poor packing or nasty drop and draggers.  This machine arrived perfectly.  If you ever get a chance to type on a Torpedo go for it they are worth it.  64 years old and still snappy!  Enjoy the pictures

Have a look at the typeface.  Check out the English keyboard with German and French extra keys.

I bought this machine on eBay from the original owner.  A gentleman living in Minnesota.  He had bought the Adler while in university, used it for his courses and then put it away.  A time capsule.  When it arrived I had Eustace overhaul it and look at the case, I couldn't get it out.  He managed to fix it but to this day it is still a bugger to get the case off.  Two things make this typewriter even more interesting. The type font is gothic as you can see and the case is a suitcase rather then the plastic fitted case.  Anyway here are some pictures.  Enjoy.
