No.15 Typewriter of the Day, Facit 1620 (1969)

No 15 TOTD Facit 1620 (1969)

Here is a Facit 1620 from my collection, Made in 1969 it is still made of metal but the machine though in great shape lacks a little of the feel of their early machines.  This machine has the original instructions, brush and key for the case but it suffers from having a plastic case that is cracking up.  It will have to be overhauled and put in my den.

Enjoy the pix.

No. 14: TOTD - Olympia SM9 1966 Version

I have collected a lot of Olympias, as you will see with typewriter of the day.  Her is a 1966 model which came with the cleaning kit and the manual pamphlet.  I haven't tried this one lately but it has been overhauled and is ready to come into service.  I love the tab keys on the ends of the space bar. Enjoy.

No 13: Typewriter of the Day - Remington Letter-Riter DeLuxe

TOTD No. 13 - Remington Letter-Riter Deluxe

I love these Remingtons, They sold millions of them over the years and the used market gives them very little value.  That is nice for me, I picked up several of them at very low prices and at the same time very well preserved.  The machines are robust to say the least and cases are very well made.  The Letter-Riter has been on the shelf for a while and could do with an overhaul and a new ribbon.  I probably will not get around to it in my lifetime but regardless I like having this machine.  Letter-Riters are a smaller and lighter version of the ubiquitous Quiet-Riter the flagship machine.  They lack the magic margin/tab system but at the same time won't pull your arm out carrying them.  Here is a picture:

No. 12 - Typewriter of the Day: 1971 Hermes 3000

No. 12 - Hermes 3000 Series 3 (1971)

I was going to sell or give this typewriter to Value Village, it was not in great shape with sun damage on several parts.  while contemplating its demise I discovered that it had a full complement of French accent keys.  Previously I had sold a Smith Corona Clipper with a full French keyboard, I had tried to use it but the key arrangement was too tough to master.  The Clipper had to go to someone who would type in French.  This machine had the English keyboard with French characters which saved it's life.

Here it is:

No 10 Typewriter of the Day: Olivetti Linea 98

10 TNo. OTD: Olivetti Linea 98

If I would have to guess this machine was the last manual typewriter series produced in the Western Hemisphere.  Manufactured in Sao Paulo Brazil I bought it still in the box.  It had been in storage for a few years and when I unpacked it I had to send it to Eutac for a tune up.  Nice machine but big.  I don't usually like the big machines because of the space they  take but I can't get rid of this one since it was such a find.

Enjoy and have a good weekend.

The sly side of these taxes and levies to restrict energy use is that they also represent new streams of taxation and fees for city coffers.  Alberta for instance doesn't have a sales tax but it managed to get a very regressive carbon tax implemented which will benefit the general revenue enormously.  Similar with cities  and their increases to tipping fees, parking costs etc.

No 9 Typewriter of the Day: Facit TP2

TOTD:  My Facit TP2

Eutac, the gentleman who repairs all of my typewriters now and the last tech in Calgary that repairs typewriters was a Facit tech when he was younger.  He was the deciding force in turning me onto the Facit machines.  This typewriter I keep at my desk in Calgary and use when I need some creative juice.  I understand how he would like them, the machines are all metal, made of Swedish steel.  the carriage slides on a ball bearings riding on a Steel shaft rather then rails which makes it very smooth and very strong.  the touch is excellent and snappy so it suits my liking.  Enjoy the picture.

No 8 Typewriter of the Day: Hermes 3000 Series 3

TOTD 8 in my series.  This is an absolutely mint Hermes 3000. When I bought it it was like opening a time capsule.  This model, I call it the series 3 was made in France by Jappy for Hermes.  I believe they had bought the company and the factory.  Most purists shun this model because it was not made in Switzerland.  I like it, here's why, early in my Career I was working with my partner at the time Tomas V.  We were working raising money for drilling and we had a little office in the Anglo-American Building on 9th Avenue in Calgary.  We needed a typewriter and Tomas's wife Heidi lent us hers, she had brought it to Canada from Germany.  It had a German keyboard which really slowed you down on it when you typed but it was a perfect machine.

The Anglo-American Building is long gone, demolished to build Bankers Hall and I assume the typewriter is also long gone.  I lost track of Tomas after he moved to New York City but I still think of him, his wife and the typewriter.

Here is the picture for your viewing pleasure.

No 7 Typewriter of the Day: Smith Corona Skyriter

TOTD: Smith Corona Skyriter.

Here is the Smith Corona Skyriter.  I like Skyriters, I have a soft spot for all of the really portable typewriters.  They were invented for people on the move.  Most lack all of the features of the larger machines but they make up for it in carrying comfort.  This machine was invented to even fit on the fold down tray on the old Stratocruisers and Super Constellations of the day.  You didn't need a plug in.

Enjoy,

Typewriter of the Day: Olivetti 22

TOTD: Olivetti 22

On day a while back, I was looking at some info on Johnny Carson, in the course of this I saw his personal typewriter, an Olivetti 22 with a tan case.  Johnny Carson was always an interesting person for me, his talk show, the fact that he was an amatuer magician and the fact that he was an avid astronomer.  He also used an Olivetti 22 typewriter.  Later I was on eBay and found that the Seattle Good Will had exactly the same typewriter for sale.  I had to buy it and add it to my collection.  The Seattle Good Will is always a great source of machines, they have a lot and they pack them well.  Here is the typewriter of the day, the Olivetti 22 in Pica pitch.

Enjoy,

Typewriter of the Day: Smith Corona Super Silent

TOTD: Smith Corona Super Silent

Thanks to Tom Hanks the Smith Corona Super Silent is very popular.  They are a great typer and I keep at least one in either of my offices to use when I feel in the mood.  They are fast and snappy - something I look for in a typewriter and they are full of quirky features that I love, the paper fingers on the carriage for one.  The other thing about them is that they are smaller than most of the similar German models which also makes them lighter and easier to carry.

Here, for your viewing pleasure is my Smith Corona Super Silent.

Typewriter of the Day: Hermes 3000, 2nd Series

TOTD: Hermes 3000, Second Series

I am a total fan of Hermes typewriters.  I am back in Calgary and this machine is one of my work typewriters here in my office.  As a Landman I hauled my first Hermes all around the priaires buying P&NG mineral leases.  I always loved the touch, the quality of the machine and reliability.

I liked the fact that Sam Shepard used this model of Hermes for his work. You can see it in the movie California typewriter.

Typewriter of the Day - Adler J5

TOTD - Adler J5.

Another quiet day, the news has nothing worth putting on the record, the blogs are quiet, so its time for the second typewriter of the day.

Here is one of my Adler J5's. It is another of my work typewriters here in Fernie.  It has lost it's case prior to coming into my possession and the lower part of the case is cracked a bit but it works beautifully.  The J5 is a full feature, late model, Typewriter with all of the finest qualities of manual typewriter development built in.  A dream to type on, not too heavy, not cumbersome compared to a full size machine and they come with a molded plastic case which makes them impervious to damage while being carried around.  The J5 is also a handsome machine, easy on the eyes, someone described them as looking like a jet fighter.  I agree.  Only downside, the rubber feet, they seem to disintegrate over time.  This problem was solved by building replacements with a 3D printer thanks to my nephew Ben.
